Salute to Israel Parade

COJECO successfully coordinated the Russian-speaking community to march proudly in suppor of Israel at this years Salute to Israel Parade. They wore their specially designed t-shirts down 5th avenue, sang songs, and waved Israeli flags all despite the heat and the waiting period they had to struggle through. COJECO is exceptionally proud and honored to be represented by its member organizations and all the participants of the parade who made this day so special!

AAJFSU celebrates its 18 years of life

18 – in Hebrew means Chaim. Chaim – in Hebrew means life...

On Sunday, March 30th, in Millennium Theater - the biggest and best Brooklyn concert hall - American Association of Jews from FSU (NY Chapter) celebrated its 18-years jubilee - 18 years of active community life! During 18 years AAJFSU advocates on the most vulnerable issues: social safety net for the poor elderly refugees and asylums and citizenship; medical insurance for immigrants and parolees; affordable and subsidized housing; citizenship and civic participation; human rights. AAJFSU meets with the political leaders, organize petition signings, and participates in activities of the New York Immigration Coalition and Jewish organizations nationwide. AAJFSU is encouraging Russian-speaking Jews to be actively involved in social and political life by becoming American citizens, register to vote and vote. That’s why many politicians and community leaders were honored to congratulate AAJFSU and to wish “to 120”!

At the same time AAJFSU showed a very special concert named “Between Purim and Passover”. The actors, musicians and volunteers were enjoying telling a funny version of an ancient but immortal story about Aman, Esther, Mordechai and King Achashverosh following this story with modern songs and dances. For Russian-speaking Jews from the former Soviet Union it looked liked unusual great combination of Jewish History nobody knew before immigration and of the Soviet songs that everybody remembers for years. sMaybe our whole life in USA looks sometimes like this combination?..

Purim Celebration by Gorsky-Kavkazi Jewish Center

Oy yes, it was fun! On Thursday, March 20th, 2008 young Gorsky leaders organized and performed great Purimshpil “Dear Jew, don’t be afraid: I’m with you!” Millennium Theater was overcrowded with spectators and participators from Gorsky-Kavkazi Jewish community as well as from Congregation Darchei Avoseinu, Brooklyn College Hillel, Kings Bay YM-YWHA, Chabad Lubavich of Kensington, Bukharian Youth Center in Brooklyn and others. This celebration became possible because of financing by UJA-Federation of New York and COJECO. Quite a few COJECO member organizations united in this event and enjoyed praying and playing, laughing and applauding together. We hope this experience will inspire other organizations and communities to organize more common events.
