COJECO Remembers Soviet Jewry Struggles

At their annual legislative breakfast last Friday at Manhattan’s Museum of Jewish Heritage, the Council of Jewish Émigré Community Organizations (COJECO) commemorated the 40- year effort of the Soviet Jewry movement, and celebrated the growth and vibrancy of New York’s Russian Jewish community. Свой первый полуофициальный визит в Нью-Йорк я совершил в 1998 году. Тогда мне просто повезло - меня и консервативного раввина Рувена Резника, работающего с новыми репатриантами из СНГ, пригласили выступить перед комиссией по еврейской идентификации UJAFederationofNewYork. Мы должны были рассказать членам комиссии о том, что происходит в Израиле в области еврейского образования для русскоязычных израильтян. Слушали нас внимательно, задавали много вопросов и, надо полагать, сделали выводы, оказавшиеся благоприятными для некоторых моих израильских коллег. Кроме того, гостеприимные хозяева решили нам показать, что делает местная община для просвещения «русских» и для приобщения их к общинной жизни....view full article

Once-isolated, now vital Russian community is starting to meld with organized American Jewry. 

Inna Arolovich never expected to feel at home in the American Jewish organizational world, which she long saw as a less-than-friendly environment.
