Projects

Currently, COJECO has three projects/initiatives it is pursuing:

1. Center Without Walls

2. Outreach School Lilmod uLelamed

3. Prins Foundation

Center Without Walls

The Center Without Walls project was created in 2006 to serve as a catalyst and help various Jewish organizations in the New York City area to attract and work successfully with the American-speaking Jews from Russian-speaking families.

Fourteen organizations were invited to participate in the Center Without Walls initiative for the 2007-2008 year. Ten received programming grants: Baruch College Hillel, Jewish Child Care Association, Bukharian Teen Lounge, Kings Bay YM-YWHA, Staten Island JCC, Washington Heights JCC, Five Towns JCC, Samuel Fields YM-YWHA, and Staten College Hillel, 92nd Street YM-YWHA and JCC in Manhattan; and four received planning grants to identify the needs and explore the demographic make-up of the community in more detail: Westchester YM-YWHA, Sid Jacobson JCC, Hebrew Educational Society, Riverdale YM-YWHA

COJECO Outreach School Lilmod uLelamed (To learn and To teach)

for young, unaffiliated Russian Jews (age from 3 to 8 years)

The programs of the Outreach School Lilmod uLelamed provide the fundamentals of Jewish identity, basic knowledge of Jewish history and culture (particularly of Russian Jewry). The School currently consists of two programs - one for pre-school children (ages 3-5) and one for school-age children (ages 5-8).

COJECO has already established the School‘s programs in some host facilities in Brooklyn (see appendix) and it is desired to market the School to reach greater market penetration in Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens and Manhattan.

The School is creating a community of people who have, in common, their lack of knowledge about Judaism. By reaching out to the members of this community in ways that are non-judgmental and non-threatening, with low barriers to entry and participation, the School is able to create positive feelings about being Jewish and to engage this community in Jewish activities.

The School engages three target audiences, who have little or no Judaic background prior to their participation:
• faculty, Russian Jewish college and high school students, who are teaching and serving as the first role models many of the younger children identify as Jewish
