COJECO Academy of Jewish Heritage presents: A Journey into Little Odessa by The Sea through Food
Tuesday, April 16th, @7:30PM EST on Zoom
If you take the local B train downtown from Manhattan to the last stop, suddenly you are transported into another world known as “Little Odessa by The Sea.” As you look around the haven, all the signs and stores are in both Russian Cyrillic and English. The shelves are filled with exotic looking caviar and different types of cured meats. From a quick Google search on where to find the best ethnic food from the Former Soviet Union in New York City, all roads will lead your taste buds to Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach. From Uzbekistani rice-based dishes known as “plov,” to Ukraine’s various dumplings known as “vareniki,” Brighton Beach has it all. This online tour will investigate the origins of this enclave and ultimately ask: what connection do the people living on Brighton Beach have to the FSU and its food?
Join us for a historical tour of Little Odessa by the Sea in Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, NYC as we discover the past of this enclave as it rapidly changes with new waves of immigration. This seminar will be led by COJECO Program Director Monica Kleyman in English.
