Brazilian Jewish Spiritism

Tuesday, October 15th, @7:30PM EST on Zoom in English by Alex Minkin, REGISTER HERE.

Program Description:

Why would a poor Jewish spirit want to possess someone in Brazil, with its heat and inflation? Since 2012, cultural anthropologist Alex Minkin has conducted research in order to answer this question, exploring the origins and nature of spirits of Jewish rebels, sages, and prostitutes in Brazilian folk religions.

Brazilian Jewish Spiritism introduces a community of Brazilians whose ancestors were both African slaves and Jews forcibly converted by the Inquisition.

“Synagogue of ancestral commitments” is a community in Northern Brazil that combines Judaism and African religions. The lecture follows the spiritual journeys, while recreating experiences from the stories of the diasporas of both Jewish and African ancestors, through temples, Jewish cemetery, and the abandoned village of Brazilian backlands where some of their ancestors fled the Inquisition.

About the presenter: Alex Minkin is a visual anthropologist, cultural activist and director of Ticun Brasil that implements educational, social and cultural projects in Rio de Janeiro and New York.

This lecture is free but requires advance registration- REGISTER HERE.
