JEWISH UPPER EAST SIDE

Walking tour with Dr. Yigal Kotler in Russian

Thursday, September 18, 6:00 PM

Discover the rich Jewish heritage woven into the fabric of one of New York City’s most elegant neighborhoods on this engaging walking tour of the Jewish Upper East Side. Led by Dr. Yigal Kotler, the tour traces the historical, architectural, and cultural legacy of the Jewish community in a district long associated with wealth and refinement.

Jews have been a vibrant presence on the Upper East Side since the Gilded Age of the late 19th century, when prominent families like the Guggenheims, Schiffs, and Warburgs built grand mansions along Fifth Avenue’s storied “Gold Coast.” This affluent enclave became home to “Our Crowd”—a close-knit group of influential German-Jewish families who rose to the highest ranks of New York society during the late 1800s and became the pillars of Jewish charity.

The tour explores the social, religious, and cultural impact of these pioneering families and their descendants, with stops at historic synagogues, architectural and cultural sites  that illuminate both the diversity and continuity of Jewish life in the neighborhood in the past and present.
