At this session with historian and educator Yigal Kotler, we will discuss the paradoxical Birobidzhan project, the influence of collectivization and industrialization on the Jews, the authorities fighting against the use of Hebrew, and the arrest of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. We will talk about cultural figures like Mikhoels and Chagall who tried to preserve their Jewishness and those like Babel and Mandelshtam who sought to become part of the great Russian and new Socialist literature. Also, we will dwell on the topic of the Great Stalin Terror (1934-1938) and the Jews.
Presentation will be conducted in Russian. Advance registration is required.
